Four of us popped into Hennessey's Tavern for some drinks and to check out the Burger of the Month. We were celebrating my birthday. (Shameless self-promotion)
None of us were overly hungry and we had food plans for later so we asked if they'd split the BOM into fourths, which they happily obliged. We also shared an order of Frings.
The BOM was pretty bomb.
Burger patty, garlic aioli, smoked cheddar cheese, grilled mushrooms, A1
Sauce, tomato, lettuce, fries, and a pickle wedge.
I enjoyed my quarter of the burger. For the frings they simply added three onion rings to the fries for the four of us to share. LOL.
It was my birthday so I got to have the pickle wedge.
I really liked the burger. Had I been ready for dinner, I could've crushed a whole one.
Good service on the covered patio in the back.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0Business owner information

Glad you had a great experience, we're very fortunate to have a great staff. As you mentioned, Lauren is a great asset behind the bar. Looking forward to see you again in the near future.
Oct 20, 2023Previous reviewBecky and I enjoyed a really good lunch at Hennessey's with another couple. We sat outside on the front patio where Michelle C. was our prompt and cheerful server.
She started with our drink orders. Becky enjoyed the weekend special Bloody Mary. Only 6 bucks! She said it was a very good Bloody Mary. I opted for a pint of Pacifico - not a weekend special - $8.50.
We love Hennessey's calamari so we started with an order for the table and it was really good as usual. ($14.75) The trio of dipping sauces are excellent. Sweet Thai chili, regular ol' tartar and a spicy aioli. The aioli is my favorite, but one can never go wrong with Sweet Thai chili.
Becky and I split the Burger of the Month. ($18.75)
Only once in my experience has the BOM not been bomb. This was certainly not that occasion.
This particular month the BOM was the "Spicy Guac-a-Peno Burger".
An as requested medium rare patty topped with jalapeño poppers, avocado spread, lettuce, Ghost Pepper cheese, tomato, tortilla strips, and red onion.
Served with fries and pickle wedge.
The kitchen happily split it in half for us and served it on two separate plates. One with fries and one with onion rings ($1.25 upcharge). We also asked for extra cheese ($1.25). They also put the guac spread on the side as I am allergic. Becky applied it to her half.
This was a massive burger. Half was more than plenty for both of us. It was perfectly medium rare. It was messy to eat, but so worth it. The poppers and the ghost pepper cheese provided a great heat. Bex said the guac spread was basically guacamole and she loved it.
The "frings" were excellent. Hennessy's fries and rings are always on point.
There was live music on the patio. A guy and his guitar. Totally cool. I mean, he did play some Grateful Dead covers (UGH!!) , but still cool. Live music is always a plus.
Excellent service from Michelle.
We always check out the BOM at Hennessy's when we visit Carlsbad.May 5, 2023Previous reviewWhile staying in Carlsbad over the New Year's weekend we visited Hennessey's Tavern twice. Hennessey's is a regular stop for us when we're in Carlsbad.
Our first stop was Friday early evening for dinner, our second was Saturday afternoon for the Fiesta Bowl a couple of beers and a snack. Friday was a 2-star event, while Saturday was a solid 5-star experience.
Friday for dinner we sat in the dining room and Kelly was our server. Service was excellent. Kelly was cute, fun and a little sassy which we loved.
Service wasn't the issue. It was the food. Not up to the standard that we have grown accustomed to from Hennessey's.
Becky wasn't overly hungry and just wanted soup so she ordered a bowl of French Onion Soup. "Home made with sourdough crouton & melted Swiss cheese".
It was terrible. She said it was the worst French onion soup that she'd ever had. She said that the broth tasted like nothing more than heated water. The sourdough crouton on top was merely a soggy piece of bread. Certainly not a crouton as the menu states. She flipped it away, took two sips and was done. Ick.
I had the Burger of the Month. Typically the BOM is a bomb burger. This one sounded great, but execution was off. This burger missed the mark. It was the "Smash Burger". Two patties, American cheese, grilled onions, bacon, bacon aioli on a brioche bun. It was served with fries and a pickle.
It was okay. I asked for medium rare and it was clearly medium well. Gray all the way through. Zero pink in the center which resulted in relatively dry double patties. There wasn't nearly enough bacon aioli applied. I probably should've asked for some on the side. The fries were tasty and I do love that they include a pickle on the side.
Very disappointing.
As noted, service from Kelly on Friday was excellent.
On Saturday we sat at the back patio bar. Lauren was our bartender and she was as a good a bartender as she was hot! Lauren was so cool, cheery and fun. Her personality created a fun vibe in the bar.
We ordered drinks and wanted a snack so we had the Great Irish Nachos.
Thinly sliced potato planks, topped with jack & cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon & scallions, with sour cream.
Redemption for Friday's lackluster meal was ours - and Hennessey's!
We'd had the Great Irish Nachos a couple of times and they've never disappointed. Not really "nachos" in the traditional sense. They more resemble loaded potato skins. Honestly I like these more than I like potato skins and they are better than a lot of nachos that I've had.
The Great Irish Nachos are one of my favorite things to order from Hennessy's.
Friday's 2-star disaster coupled with Saturday's 5-star visit makes for a combined solid 4-star.
Worth mentioning again is the excellent service from both Kelly and Lauren.Aug 8, 2022Previous reviewWe love Hennessey's in Carlsbad.
We plan our visits to Carlsbad around the Burger of the Month special depending on what it is. I'm not even joking.
Hennessy's knows how to make a burger. The BOM is always a one-off, unique creation and it always satisfies.
We always sit at the bar because we love the bartender stylings of David. The dude is so cool and so funny. He is a superb bartender with an excellent bartender's personality.
Only on occasion do Becky and I order breakfast and when we are at Hennessy's that doesn't change. However, we've been with friends who do and they rave about the breakfast.
It should be noted that Hennessey's makes their own freshly squeezed orange juice. Once while sitting at the bar, Bex and I watched David make gallons of fresh O.J. They have a giant juicer on the bar and Dave was putting orange after orange into it extracting the fresh juice. We thought that was pretty cool.
I'm disappointed. We didn't make it to Hennessy's in July and the BOM looked BOMB.
The Cheese Chipotle Burger. A burger patty topped with Irish cheddar, grilled onions, cheese curds, chipotle sauce lettuce and tomato. Always served with fries and a pickle wedge.
Dahhhhhmmmit.
Let's see what they've got in line for August! Make it a good one Hennessy's!Apr 30, 2021Previous reviewHennessey's has turned a corner and has become an easy five stars!
We recently had lunch there with Yelper Carolyn A. and her hubby. What a great lunch it was.
I had the Burger of the Month and it was fantastic. April's burger was the Smokey Mushroom Burger. A thick patty topped with smoked cheddar fried onions and a "creamy mushroom mixture". For the bun they used Texas Toast, which I thought was awesome. Even if I did get the heel. It was one the best burgers I've ever had. Cooked to a perfect rare. Hennessey's is killin' it in the burger game!
Becky had her Hennessey's fave, the B.L.T. & AVO. Six full slices of bacon! Romaine, tomato and fresh avocado on toasted sourdough. She loved it of course.
C.A. Chose breakfast. She had two eggs scrambled with sausage, home fried potatoes and sourdough toast. She very much liked it. I tried some of her home fries and they were really good. Crispy exterior, really well seasoned. The sausage was very tasty as well.
C.A.'s hubby was the smartest of all of us. He opted to not order anything. He knew that he'd get half of Becky's sandwich, a 1/4 of my burger and a sizeable portion of C.A.'s breakfast. He was right and he enjoyed all of our food. He even saved us money as Bex and I picked up the tab! :-)
We sat on the patio where Michelle was our server. She was cute and bubbly. Super friendly and very attentive. We had a couple of odd-ball requests and Michelle had perfect execution of them. She doted on our dogs and made sure that they had plenty of water. She was great. You've got a good one there Hennessey's!Sep 9, 2020Previous reviewWhat do we do to beat the Santee heat? House sit for our friends in Carlsbad, that's what! We packed up the dogs and headed to the coast.
A trip to Carlsbad always necessitates a trip to Hennessy's - a short 5 minute walk from our friends' house.
Hennessy's is dog friendly and people friendly.
We found seats on the patio and we were ready for lunch.
I had the burger of the month. The Irish Bacon Whiskey Burger. A thick burger topped with Irish bacon (basically ham), Irish cheddar, Irish whiskey glaze, and French fried onions on a brioche bun. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare and was a really good burger. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Becky had the B.L.T & Avo Sandwich. Six slices of bacon, avocado, romaine lettuce and tomato on toasted sourdough. She loved it.
Try The Great Irish Nachos they are excellent also. Thinly sliced potato planks, topped with jack & cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon & scallions, with sour cream. I highly recommend them.
Outside of happy hour Hennessy's tends to get a little pricey. Especially for beer and cocktails. Look for HH hours and specials!
We've found that service can be inconsistent. We've been to Hennessy's seven or eight times. Sometimes we've gotten excellent service, other times it has been sluggish and indifferent. On our most recent visit service was excellent. My apologies to our server for not remembering her name. (A very pretty, pleasant young woman. She was great with our pups too. Friday, Sep. 4 around 3:00 - 4:00 pm front patio by the TV).
See you next time Hennessy's!Feb 4, 2020Previous reviewVisiting the Carlsbad Village? Feel like a beer or cocktail? Maybe a bite to eat? Go to Hennessey's Tavern. While all are good, Hennessey's does not have the best beer, the best cocktails or the best food. They're all really good, just not the best.
What Hennessey's does have is Lauren and Lauren is t h e best! She'll be waiting behind the bar for you to order that beer, cocktail or food.
Go see Lauren at Hennessey's!Aug 25, 2019Previous reviewWhile visiting friends in Carlsbad we leashed up our dogs and walked to Hennessey's. The patios, both front and rear are dog friendly. The service on this day was lackadaisical at best. Our server seemed disinterested. They did put the Padres game on the TV for me when I asked. When we walked in it was "Judge Judy" on the TV. WTF Hennessey's?!
We ordered our beers and cocktails and the calamari. The calamari was surprisingly good. It was served with three dipping sauces: sweet Thai chili, regular ol' tartar and a spice aioli. The aioli was by far the favorite of the table. The tartar went untouched. It was a sizeable portion, enough for the four of us. We'll definitely be back. Cool place. - 1094201Feb 18, 20241 check-in
The place was clean and well lit. Plenty of dinning space. They have a front patio as well as an inside patio dinning with a covering that is not seen below. They also have a bar area which is separate from the dinning area by a half wall so it's still close and visible.
The service was nice and friendly we had Chloe she was very polite and accommodating with the menu. She check on us as well throughout our dinning which is always a ++ She would be the definition of what good service should be like. The food was good we had a fish platter which the hubby and I shared. It was definitely an enough food for two. If you have a big man hunger then this would be good for one person but we weren't looking to get guy busting full.
The fish was season and fried golden brown and crispy fries seasoned perfectly. The coleslaw was good as well surprisingly (you never know what you gonna get with coleslaw) I will definitely be back and will try the burgers or chicken strip next time. I recommend giving this one a try. Prices range from $10-30 depending on what you get but worth the price for the amount of food. Parking is along the curb which can be tricky and why I gave a 4 but all is all great place.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 17, 2024Updated review3 check-ins
Fun local lunch spot with a nice patio, great back patio and bar/restaurant inside.
You want breakfast? No problem. Lunch? Dinner?
All kinds of Irish type dishes and drink specials all day long. Great service, today was Michelle who took good care of us.
Tuna melt, good.... Chips were worth the trip. Frisco burger was perfectly cooked and fries great. Overcast today so it was quiet, but great when it warms up.
Fun spot!Helpful 9Thanks 3Love this 14Oh no 0Mar 17, 2018Previous reviewReally good St. Patty's breakfast deal today. It's nice to have this place down here as it reminds us of the South Bay locations.
Had the corned beef hash and a Guinness with a mimosa follow up. Very good, the Capt. Crunch French toast got raves.
Good service albeit a bit overwhelmed. Easy parking like everywhere in Carlsbad.
Check out the daily specials and happy hours deals. 2 for 1 burger night is a good deal.
A bit tough to find, but if you need a Jameson you'll find it! - Aug 21, 2023
Went here with a couple of co workers. And it was great, it was a great place to unwind with good drinks, not overpriced. Food was great too! We had some mimosa, hennesy lemonade, some beer and shots of tequila. Our server, i forgot her name, but she was so patient and friendly with us. They had live music too, which was a little loud if you were seated outside and want to have a conversation with your group, luckily they took breaks in between so we were able to talk to each other.
Overall, a great place to relax and have a good time!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Toni F.Oceanside, San Diego, CA86151Apr 6, 2024

What a disappointing experience for dinner. The Fish and Chips did not have any flavor and my wife's cheeseburger was a culinary mess of thrown together ingredients. Hennessy's used to be the best place for an evening of great food, drinks, and entertainment.
Also, I should not forget to mention the singer that was performing until 7:00 pm that should be paying for the ability to perform as he was loud, but not very talented. Save your money and find a great restaurant to truly enjoy a rewarding experience.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Leah S.Laveen Village, Phoenix, AZ191Feb 17, 2024
Went here last night while out bar hopping. I haven't been here in a few years and now I definitely won't be coming back. I should've known because it was empty on a Friday night. We ordered a beer and a shot each and some frings... it was $59 and that didn't include a tip. They charged $2 each for it being 'neat' on top of the shot being $10.25 each, so $12.25 for a shot of Jameson. The waitress tried justifying the cost saying "well it is Jameson and he poured them heavy" I'm sorry but that was no where close to being poured heavy. Will not be back.

My nephew told me about Hennessey's Tavern so we decided to give it a try. Much to our surprise we got there on a Thursday so we are able to take advantage of their $6 Thursday Smash Burgers. I went there with my daughter and my grandchildren and we all enjoyed our burgers and our hand cut crispy french fries. The onion rings were also excellent. The service at Hennessy's was very good the young lady that took care of us was quick prompt and very helpful. It's always nice to receive good service and good food all at the same time. But the best part of the evening came when we ordered dessert. We got the French toast Captain Crunch ice cream caramel craziness we bought one to split and it was gone in 30 seconds had to order another I want to thank my nephew Russell for referring us to this place and we will be back thank you Hennessey's.

We come here quite often and the food is really good.
Our servers have always been nice and attentive.
The only thing that absolutely displeases me is how dirty it is in there. The booths always have crumbs or grim. The floor is so gross. It wouldn't kill them to steam that carpet. Or heck rip it out and put tile. Easier to take care of. Just a thought.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1
